Perfect Wines to Pair with Pumpkin Dishes
It’s pumpkin season! We all know this winter squash makes for great Fall décor and tasty spiced lattes but its character really shines when we learn how very healthy it is for us. Pumpkin is high in potassium and beta-carotene as well as vitamins A, E, C and B. Enough said. This season, let’s get our cooking aprons on and experiment a bit more with this very versatile orange vegetable. And where there is food, there is wine!

Here are a few perfect wines to pair with pumpkin dishes!

Chardonnay & Pumpkin Soup
Chilly Autumn nights are easily warmed up with a creamy pumpkin soup which is easy to make and requires few ingredients. Use fresh pumpkin over canned, homemade stock or water, extra virgin olive oil and whole milk or if you want to add even more flavor to this dish - coconut milk. The best pairing for a rich and flavorful winter soup like this is a Farnito Chardonnay IGT. This dry, soft and savory wine whose tropical spices and fruity flavors blend perfectly with the delicate sweetness of pumpkin makes for the perfect combination. This is a wine combo worth trying over and over again!

Novello Wine & Pumpkin Gnocchi
This is the season of novello wines so let’s make the most of it and pair it with another seasonal product – pumpkin! You may have had the traditional potato gnocchi before, but if you want to try something a bit different, substitute the potato in your gnocchi recipe with fresh, boiled pumpkin! The recipe is simple and ingredients include pumpkin, flour, salt and an egg. Serve warm with a bit of fresh butter and sage and you have an incredibly flavorful dish. A great wine pairing for an earthy dish like this is a wine with a delicate bouquet such as a Novello di Toscana IGT whose character emits soft and subtle cherry, vanilla and coffee flavors. Trust us, it works!

Spumante Brut & Pumpkin Risotto
Risotto is a dish that can be enjoyed all year round, but there is something special about eating it in the Fall. It somehow is made for this season. There are many risotto recipes, we suggest you try one made with fresh pumpkin, nutmeg and gorgonzola. Make sure you watch over your risotto like an Italian grandma, hovering over the stovetop and stirring away until you get that perfect creamy consistency. An ideal wine for a dish like this is by far a Spumante Brut. The better the pearlage of the bubbles, the more satisfying each bite will be as your wine will cleanse your palate of the rich gorgonzola flavor, making each bite a completely new sensory experience. This is a tried and true combo.
The most important part is to enjoy your pumpkin pairing!
