One of the hidden wine treasures of Tuscany is Super Tuscan Wines. The term refers to a wine that is made with non-indigenous varieties of grapes such as Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot.
Many people have the idea that the only wine from Tuscany is Chianti; this is absolutely wrong. Chianti is a very specific wine made from Sangiovese grapes and is produced only in the Chianti region.
The wine was first produced by Tuscan winemakers who wanted to produce wines using non-native grapes. They mixed grapes like Merlot into their wines to produce very high-quality wines.
Eventually, the system was changed to include the new designation of IGT. That allowed the winemakers to create even more delicious wines.
These wonderful wines vary in character from rich Syrah-based wines to fruity Sangiovese wines. Each is a delight in its own right, making each “must try” bottle a reward unto itself.
