You may not be familiar with Eiswein, but this dessert wine which originates in Germany, it is considered a trend this 2019.
The growing of this kind of wine is tricky. There are many environments where it wouldn't come to fruition. The grapes used to make it have to be grown throughout the summer months. Those grapes then need to spend the winter being frozen.
This wine dates back to the 19th century. At that time, it is believed that the wine may have resulted from unexpectedly early cold weather in Schloss Johannisberg. Even though the grapes had unexpectedly become frozen, the winemaker still wanted to use them. Due to the success of the wine, they decided to continue making it.
The wine can only result from grapes that stayed on a vine while freezing. It can't be replicated by taking grapes off the vine and freezing them. Now that makes for one special wine!
