Pairing Wine and Pumpkin Dishes
It’s pumpkin season and that means that you will most likely find yourself with pumpkin lattes for breakfast, pumpkin soup for lunch and pumpkin pie as an evening snack. But do your pumpkin justice and enjoy a glass of perfectly paired wine with your meal. Here are a few ways you could be pairing wine and pumpkin dishes! Pumpkin Coconut Soup There is no better soup that signals the beginning of Autumn, than Pumpkin Coconut Soup. If your soup has exotic flavors like coconut and ginger a great wine to pair with this is a Chardonnay. Another great wine whose subtle flavors are complimented by this soup is a Riesling. Pumpkin Ravioli with Butter and Sage This is a subtle dish which really brings out the sweetness of the pumpkin with a bit of butter and cheese to serve as fat in the meal. A higher alcohol wine such as a Gewürztraminer works well. Pumpkin Stew A great early winter meal is a heart pumpkin stew with beef, carrots, potatoes and of course pumpkin! And what’s better than serving it from the pumpkin itself, using it as a bowl. These rich flavors are robust enough to be able to serve it with a red wine. Best pairings are a Cabernet Sauvignon or a Syrah. Pumpkin Pie Yes, you should indeed drink wine with your pumpkin pie so save that coffee for the very end of the meal. Enjoy a slice of good old homemade pumpkin pie and enjoy a glass of sherry, madeira or even a glass of Riesling. Now that you have your menu, decide on a few wines for the week and enjoy your pumpkin meals in style. And yes, you don’t only have to have pumpkin with white wine – reds and sweet wines are possible to pair with this delicious vegetable! Stay warm and nourished. Bon appetit!
