Wine Word of the Day: ‘Body’ Definition
Getting into the world of wine, one of the earliest terms you will become familiar with is the concept of the 'body' of the wine. This refers to the mouthfeel of the particular wine. Much in the same way that adding creamer to a coffee increases the weight of the beverage or the differences between skim, 1%, 2%, and whole milk, the body is the heaviness of the wine.

In white wines, a light-bodied Sauvignon Blanc with it's watery, wispy mouthfeel will differ noticeably from another white wine like a full-bodied Chardonnay that will linger longer in your mouth. Similarly, in the realm of red wines, a lighter variety that is Pinot Noir will have the same dynamic as mentioned previously against a heavier red wine like a heavy Cabernet.

Besides wines in stark contrast to each other, there are varieties that strike somewhere in the middle as well. Body is another matter of preference and adds diversity to our hobby.
